Life is unpredictable. For a young dreamer, life can present various challenges as they try to navigate a path that is deemed successful. For my final project at Parsons, I wanted to create an expressionist piece that embodies this sentiment. Look Up tells the story of Milo, an aspiring beat producer who finds himself at the mercy of a tech-ridden and hustle-oriented society.
While crafting this experience, I tried to delve into the various nuances we all as creatives face today. Whilst doing so, I tried to reflect upon my own experiences, and thinking through what would be considered relatable. Inspired by Nam June Paik, I critiqued how we all, on a human level, interact with tech. The interactivity itself offers an illusion of choice, much like our minds which are distracted and crave digital dopamine.
Ironically, I had to sit in front of a screen (endlessly, for almost two months) in order to bring this vision to fruition.
Look Up also delves into other nuanced (and widely relatable) struggles, showcasing parental disputes, addiction, and the pervasive reach of adverts.
